In the UK, acquiring a full motorcycle licence is a comprehensive process designed to ensure that riders possess the necessary skills and knowledge for safe riding.

This process comprises several stages, each designed to progressively build a rider's competence and confidence on two wheels.

- Compulsory Basic Training (CBT): This is the initial step towards obtaining a full motorcycle licence. The CBT is designed to teach beginners the fundamental skills required to ride a motorcycle safely.

- Motorcycle Theory Test: This is a computer-based test comprising multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception section. The test assesses the rider's knowledge of road signs, traffic laws, and rider safety. Passing the Motorcycle Theory Test is essential for advancing to the practical motorcycle tests.

- Practical Motorcycle Test – Module 1 (Off-Road Manoeuvres): This is the first part of the Practical Motorcycle Test and takes place off-road in a controlled environment. It is designed to assess the rider’s ability to handle a motorcycle through various manoeuvres, including U-turns, figure-of-eight, controlled stops, and avoidance and emergency stop exercises. This module tests the rider's control and handling of the motorcycle at low and higher speeds.

- Practical Motorcycle Test – Module 2 (On-Road Riding): The final stage in obtaining a full motorcycle licence is the Module 2 test, which involves on-road riding. This test evaluates the rider's ability to interact safely with other road users and to ride competently in a variety of road and traffic conditions. The examiner follows the rider on another vehicle, giving instructions and assessing the rider's performance on aspects such as road positioning, observation, signalling, and adherence to traffic rules.

Successfully completing all these stages demonstrates that the rider has the necessary skills, knowledge, and attitude to ride safely and responsibly on public roads. Upon passing both parts of the Practical Motorcycle Test, the rider is awarded a full motorcycle licence.

NO, in the UK, the type of motorcycle you can use for your practical test depends on the motorcycle licence category you are applying for.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) specifies the requirements for the motorcycle used in the test, and these requirements vary for each licence category: AM, A1, A2, and A.

- AM Licence
Age Requirement: Minimum 16 years old.
Motorcycle Specification: You must use a moped with a maximum engine size of 50cc and a top speed of no more than 45 km/h (28 mph).

- A1 Licence
Age Requirement: Minimum 17 years old.
Motorcycle Specification: The motorcycle must be at least 120cc and not more than 125cc, capable of at least 90 km/h (55 mph), and have a power output up to 11 kW (14.6 bhp).

- A2 Licence
Age Requirement: Minimum 19 years old.
Motorcycle Specification: The motorcycle must have a power output between 20 kW (26.8 bhp) and 35 kW (46.9 bhp). Additionally, it should not be derived from a vehicle of more than double its power.

- A Licence
Age Requirement: Minimum 24 years old (or 21 years old if you have held an A2 licence for at least 2 years).
Motorcycle Specification: The motorcycle must have a power output of at least 50 kW (67 bhp) and a weight of at least 180 kg.

For all categories, the motorcycle must be roadworthy, legal, and have L-plates displayed (unless you’re using a motorcycle with a sidecar for the test). The specifics of these requirements ensure that the motorcycle used for testing is appropriate for the level of licence being applied for and that it demonstrates the rider’s ability to handle a motorcycle of that power and size safely.

It's important to check with the DVSA or a qualified motorcycle training school, like Universal Motorcycle Training, for the most current and detailed requirements before booking your test.
