Thinking about booking your CBT but not sure what to expect?
A CBT day usually starts with an introduction, eyesight check and basic safety briefing. You’ll then move on to practical on-site training, learning the motorcycle controls, moving off, stopping, steering, observations and slow control.
Once your instructor is satisfied that you’re safe and ready, you’ll progress to road training and a minimum two-hour on-road ride. CBT is training, not a traditional pass-or-fail test – the aim is to make sure you can ride safely and confidently before being issued with your DL196 certificate.

📋 𝗖𝗕𝗧 (𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴) — The essential first step required by law. One day of structured training, and you leave with your DL196 certificate, ready to ride a 125cc legally on UK roads.
🏁 𝗔𝟭 𝗟𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (age 17+) — Full licence for up to 125cc bikes. Perfect if you want to ride without L-plates and without time restrictions.
⚡ 𝗔𝟮 𝗟𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (age 19+) — Step up to restricted bikes up to 35kW. A great mid-point for riders who want more power with a clear upgrade path ahead.
🔓 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗔 / 𝗗𝗔𝗦 (age 24+, or 21+ with 2 years on A2) — No restrictions. Any bike. Any power. The final destination.
