What CBT involves
CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training. It is a DVSA-regulated training course for learner moped and motorcycle riders. It is not a pass/fail test. Your instructor will take you through the training in stages and will only move you forward when they are satisfied you are ready to do so safely.
CBT is made up of five elements:
- Element A – Introduction: the course introduction, licence checks, eyesight check and a discussion about suitable clothing and safety equipment.
- Element B – Practical on-site training: you learn about the motorcycle or scooter, controls, basic safety checks and how to handle the machine.
- Element C – Practical on-site riding: you practise riding in a safe off-road training area, including moving off, stopping, slow control, turning and other basic riding skills.
- Element D – Practical on-road training: your instructor explains road riding, legal responsibilities, positioning, observations, junctions, roundabouts and how to ride safely with other traffic.
- Element E – Practical on-road riding: you complete an on-road ride with your instructor, which must include at least two hours of road riding. The instructor will assess whether you can ride safely and legally as a learner.
If you reach the required standard, you will be issued with a DL196 CBT certificate. The DL196 certificate is valid for two years. If it expires before you gain a full motorcycle licence, you will need to complete CBT again to continue riding as a learner.
