What CBT involves

CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training. It is a structured motorcycle training course, not a pass/fail test. Your instructor will guide you through the required stages and will only move you on when they are satisfied that you are ready to continue safely.

CBT has five elements:

  • Element A – Introduction: the course introduction, licence check, eyesight check and a discussion about suitable clothing and safety equipment.
  • Element B – Practical on-site training: you learn about the motorcycle or scooter, the controls, basic safety checks and how to handle the machine safely.
  • Element C – Practical on-site riding: you practise riding in an off-road training area, normally including moving off, stopping, turning, slow control, braking and other core machine control skills.
  • Element D – Practical on-road training: your instructor explains the road riding part of CBT, including observations, road positioning, junctions, roundabouts, legal responsibilities and safe riding with other traffic.
  • Element E – Practical on-road riding: you complete an on-road ride with your instructor, which must include at least two hours of road riding. Your instructor will assess whether you can ride safely and legally as a learner.

If your instructor is satisfied that you have reached the required standard, you will receive a DL196 CBT certificate. The DL196 certificate is valid for two years. If it expires before you gain a full motorcycle licence, you must complete CBT again to continue riding as a learner.
