  • Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS) DVSA

This page is also available in: English Português (Portuguese (Brazil)) Español (Spanish)

The DVSA Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS) checks your motorcycle riding skills and provides training to help you improve. There is no test. Once you’ve successfully completed the scheme you will get a “DVSA Certificate of Competence” and you can use it to get discounts on motorcycle insurance.

You can take the enhanced rider scheme, if you’re a fully licensed motorcyclist and have passed your test.

The scheme will be suitable if you either:

    • have just passed your full motorcycle licence test or
    • are returning to riding after a break or
    • are upgrading to a more powerful motorcycle or
    • want to check and improve your riding standard

As previously said, once you have completed the Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS) course you will get your DVSA Certificate of Competence. This certificate is normally valid for life. Most insurance companies will offer you a discount on your motorcycle insurance once you receive this.

Some of the reasons as to why take your Enhanced Rider training with us:

    • Instructors are Advanced Riders trained by RoSPA and assessed by the DVSA
    • Normally One-to-one or maximum Two-to-one tuition ratio
    • Certificate gives you discounts on Motorcycle Insurance
    • Certificate is normally valid for life
    • Progress onto Advanced Motorcycle Training
    • Own bike recommended (however, daily hire is also available)

Get more out of your riding and motorcycle by taking the Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS). You’ll get your own personal instructor to help you make your riding more enjoyable and safe. You can also get insurance discounts with most motorcycle insurance brokers.

About the Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS)

Universl Motorcycle Training is included in the Register of Post Test Motorcycle Trainers, suitably qualified to deliver training to current full licence holders and enhance your skills further, ensuring safer riding through minimizing the risks associated with planning and machine control.

Who the enhanced rider scheme is for?

The ERS (Enhanced Rider Scheme) introduced by the government is aimed primarily at riders who:

    • Have recently passed their full motorcycle licence test
    • Upgrading to a more powerful machine
    • Returning to motorcycling after a break
    • Are looking for an assessment of current skill level and development

What the enhanced rider scheme involves?

Your instructor will give advice on the basic principles of safety from how to make yourself more visible and create a better presence on the road, how to use the power of the machine in a controlled and safer manner, how to use road positioning to your advantage, how to improve cornering skills, overtaking skills, town riding and filtering and much more…

What happens during the enhanced rider scheme assessment?

ERS is not a pass or fail test. Following an initial assessment of current skill level carefully matched with the rider’s personal needs a rider development plan is devised that concentrates on the specific areas requiring attention, rather than taking a “one size fits all” approach.

The course will last long enough for your trainer to make an accurate assessment of your needs. For most people this is three to four hours.

If you don’t need any further training?

In regards to delivering ERS courses, Universal Motorcycle Training advanced rider instructors are trained by RoSPA (Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents). Hence, there is always something we can learn and your personal instructor will ensure you have a value for money full day, and of course, that coveted DVSA ERS certificate.

If you do need further training?

If you do need some training, you’ll get your own personalized plan for sharpening your skills. The plan will focus on the areas that will help you get more out of your riding.

    What does your training includes?

The training is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach – it’s all personalized for you.

Your trainer will help you with the areas that will make your riding more enjoyable. They’ll give you expert advice and show you how to improve your skills in areas like:

    • town riding
    • hazard identification
    • motorway riding
    • cornering
    • filtering
    • negotiating bends
    • positioning
    • riding smoothly

What happens at the end of your training?

After you have had all the training you need you’ll get:

    • a full debrief and a written report about your riding
    • a ‘DVSA certificate of competence’ – you can use this to get an insurance discount
