According to Paul, one of our most experienced DVSA-certified instructors at Universal Motorcycle Training®, the biggest mistake new riders make is simple – lack of preparation and planning.
🔍 “Too many beginners turn up underdressed, underprepared, and unsure,” Paul says.
Here are the top three rookie errors he sees time and again:
1️⃣ Wrong Clothing – Turning up in trainers, jeans, or casual jackets. Remember: protective, motorcycle-specific gear isn`t optional – it`s lifesaving.
2️⃣ Poor Planning – Arriving late or flustered, which sets the wrong tone for a day of training.
3️⃣ Unnecessary Filtering – Trying to filter through traffic before mastering slow-speed control and road positioning.

❓ Do I need to do a CBT before going for my full motorcycle licence?
✅ Yes, you do!
Before you can move on to a full motorcycle licence (A1, A2, or A), you must first complete a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT). This is a legal requirement in the UK, as set out by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
CBT ensures you understand the basics of motorcycle control and road safety before progressing to more powerful bikes and advanced training.

Take your Motorcycle Theory Test
Book a course for your full licence with us (including Module 1 and Module 2)
🕒 CBT certificates are valid for 2 years, giving you time to build confidence or go straight into your full licence training.
