No training school can promise a pass or a finish date, because theory and DVSA test slot availability, how the training days are spread, your starting standard and any retest all affect the elapsed time.
What does a full motorbike licence actually cost?
The clearest answer comes from adding the published prices for the route you will actually take. This section gives the arithmetic rather than repeating the wider explanation of cost components and budgeting in Cost of a Motorcycle Licence.
If you already hold a valid CBT and do not need a first provisional licence, the A1 and A2 totals are:
- A1 or A2 Bronze, four days: £1,090 for the package plus £23 for the theory test, giving £1,113.
- A1 or A2 Silver, five days: £1,340 for the package plus £23 for the theory test, giving £1,363.
- A1 or A2 Gold: £1,590 for the package plus £23 for the theory test, giving £1,613.
For A1 and A2, Universal Motorcycle Training® books the Module 1 and Module 2 test slots. The standard combined practical-test fee of £90.50 is already inside the package price, so do not add it again. You book and pay the £23 motorcycle theory test directly with the DVSA, and you must hold a valid CBT before the package starts unless you have booked the combined complete-beginner route.
For a complete beginner taking the combined CBT and A1 route:
- Six-day CBT and A1 Complete Beginner package: £1,545.
- Package plus theory test: £1,568.
- Package, theory and first provisional licence applied for online: £1,602.
- Package, theory and first provisional licence applied for by post: £1,611.
For an A2 rider who needs a new CBT before the licence course:
- Bronze: £1,090 package plus £205 CBT plus £23 theory, giving £1,318.
- Silver: £1,340 package plus £205 CBT plus £23 theory, giving £1,568.
- Gold: £1,590 package plus £205 CBT plus £23 theory, giving £1,818.
If a first provisional licence is also needed, the A2 Bronze total becomes £1,352 online or £1,361 by post. Silver becomes £1,602 online or £1,611 by post. Gold becomes £1,852 online or £1,861 by post.
For Category A direct access, the practical test fees are included in the package price, as they are in every Universal Motorcycle Training® full licence package. For a rider who already holds a valid CBT and does not need a first provisional licence, adding the separate £23 theory test gives totals of £1,113 for Bronze, £1,363 for Silver and £1,613 for Gold. What do you pay the DVSA, and what do you pay a training school?
The DVSA charges statutory fees for the theory test and the two practical modules. The first provisional driving licence fee is paid to the DVLA. Universal Motorcycle Training® charges for the training package, with the relevant practical test fees already included in every full licence package.
- Motorcycle theory test: £23, whether taken on a weekday, during an evening, at a weekend or on a bank holiday.
- Module 1 off-road test: £15.50 at all times.
- Module 2 on-road test: £75 on a weekday, or £88.50 during an evening, at a weekend or on a bank holiday.
- First provisional driving licence: £34 when applying online or £43 when applying by post.
The standard weekday Module 1 and Module 2 fees come to £90.50. You should not add that amount to a Universal Motorcycle Training® full licence package, because the relevant practical test fees are already inside the published package price.
For A1 and A2 packages, we book the Module 1 and Module 2 test slots on your behalf. For Category A packages, the practical test fees are also included in the package price. In every category, you book and pay for your own £23 motorcycle theory test directly with the DVSA.
The first provisional licence is separate. It is paid to the DVLA only if you need one, and it is not part of the training-school package.
How long does it take to go from CBT to a full licence?
The reliable way to measure the commitment is by booked training days rather than promising a number of calendar weeks.
- A1 Bronze: four days.
- A1 Silver: five days.
- A1 Gold: six days.
- A2 Bronze: four days.
- A2 Silver: five days.
- A2 Gold: six days.
- Category A Bronze: four days.
- Category A Silver: five days.
- Category A Gold: six days.
- CBT and A1 Complete Beginner: six days.

Those are the days included in the course, not a guaranteed finish date. The elapsed calendar time also depends on when you can take the theory test, the availability of DVSA Module 1 and Module 2 slots at your chosen test centre, how the training days are spread and whether either practical module has to be taken again.
Training and test availability can also differ between our Centres. A course made up of four or five booked days might therefore be delivered across a longer period rather than on consecutive days.
Which route applies at your age?
Your age determines which licence route is available. For the category definitions and the motorcycles each licence covers, see A1 vs A2 vs Full Licence.
- From age 16: you can take the AM moped route.
- From age 17: you can take the A1 route.
- From age 19: you can take the A2 route.
- From age 24: you can take Category A by direct access through the DAS Full Licence route.
- From age 21: you can take Category A by progressive access after holding an A2 licence for two years.
Moving from A1 or A2 to a higher category is not automatic. Under the law in force today, you must pass Module 1 and Module 2 again on the appropriate larger motorcycle. Holding the lower category for a set period does not replace either practical test.
What makes the total go up or down?
The main variables are the documents and training you already have, the package tier you choose and whether another practical test fee becomes payable.
- Whether your CBT is valid: if you do not already hold a valid CBT, add £205 for Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) London or a CBT renewal.
- Whether you need a first provisional driving licence: add £34 when applying online or £43 when applying by post.
- Your package tier: Bronze costs £1,090, Silver costs £1,340 and Gold costs £1,590 where offered. The relevant practical test fees are included in the package price, while the £23 theory test remains your own booking and payment.
- Moving from an automatic scooter to a geared motorcycle: Gear Conversion costs £125 for two hours or £250 for four hours.
- Extra preparation for a nervous or complete beginner: the two-hour Introduction to Motorcycling session costs £125.
- A practical retest: if you do not pass a module, its DVSA fee must be paid again. Module 1 costs £15.50. Module 2 costs £75 on a weekday or £88.50 during an evening, at a weekend or on a bank holiday.
The initial practical test fees should not be added to the published Universal Motorcycle Training® package price because they are already included. The additional DVSA amounts become relevant when another test attempt is required.
For context, the DVSA recorded a Module 1 pass rate of 73.3 per cent across 58,931 tests and a Module 2 pass rate of 72.4 per cent across 57,532 tests in 2025-26. These are national results across all candidates. They do not predict whether any particular rider will pass.
