Course overview
The session aims to:
- equip you with the skills to ride safely on urban roads, including how to filter, overtake and ride in bus lanes
- improve your hazard perception and defensive riding, for example when approaching a junction
- promote the right use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- help you understand the need to ride at speeds that suit the road conditions
- promote further training where there is a need
Who can take part
1-2-1 Motorcycle Skills training sessions are available to anyone who lives, works or studies in any of the 33 London boroughs, with a strong emphasis on riders who are:
- between the ages of 16 and 40
- inexperienced and holding a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) certificate only
- riding to commute to or from work or education
- using a low-powered motorcycle, scooter or moped
However, it is open to all riders who live, study or work in any of the 33 London boroughs (for example full motorcycle licence holders, all ages).
Location: we come to you (for example your home, workplace or a neutral location). Sessions are led by you: they are based on what you want to learn and the routes you want to ride. We will encourage you to choose the routes you use most often, or the ones you find most challenging.
Duration: two hours
Cost: FREE OF CHARGE
Valid driving licences: please click here to see the list of driving licences that are valid for riding a motorcycle or scooter legally in the UK and acceptable for this course.
How the session works
The assessment ride
Your instructor follows you on public roads and assesses your riding, including (where possible), but not limited to:
- normal road positioning
- separation distance
- appropriate use of speed
- use of observations
- use of mirrors
- road attitude
- junction approach procedures (for example OSMPSL)
- roundabout procedures (mini, standard, multi-lane)
- reaction to other road users
- progress and hesitancy
- corners and bends
- motorways and dual carriageways (where available and allowed, for example with a full motorcycle licence)
Your instructor gives you feedback as you go, by radio and at stops, using video and other training aids where relevant.
